Speaking Sons is a documented conversation series that provides a safe, structured environment where young men can speak openly about responsibility, expectations, pressure, and the realities of growing into adulthood.
Through careful listening and thoughtful dialogue, the project seeks to preserve honest perspectives that are often overlooked in public discussions about youth development.
In many communities, including places like Mando in Kaduna State, young men grow up carrying significant expectations.
They are expected to provide.
They are expected to be strong.
They are expected to figure out life’s responsibilities quickly and quietly.
Yet very few spaces exist where these young men can speak honestly about what they are experiencing.
Important conversations around youth development often focus on empowering the girl child — and rightly so. These efforts have created meaningful opportunities for many young women.
However, the experiences of young men are frequently left undocumented and unexplored. Many boys grow into adulthood navigating pressure, identity, responsibility, and emotional challenges without structured opportunities to discuss them.
Speaking Sons exists to address this gap.
This initiative does not aim to argue or debate competing narratives. Instead, it seeks to document lived experiences and create a respectful environment where young men can articulate their thoughts, challenges, and hopes for the future.
The project is rooted in a simple belief:
Understanding begins with listening.
The mission of Speaking Sons is to build a thoughtful and credible archive of the young male experience within our communities.
This initiative seeks to:
Provide a respectful platform where young men can express their perspectives without fear of ridicule or dismissal.
Document the realities, pressures, and expectations young men face as they navigate adulthood.
Encourage healthier conversations within families, communities, and institutions about the development of boys into responsible men.
Foster empathy and understanding between generations and across genders through honest dialogue.
Build purposeful partnerships with NGOs, community leaders, and educational institutions who share our commitment to youth development.
Translate dialogue into action by using this documented archive to attract sponsorships and resources that will directly empower these young men through mentorship, skill development, and employment opportunities.
By preserving these conversations, Speaking Sons aims to contribute to a broader cultural reflection about responsibility, maturity, identity, and the future of young men in society.
Ultimately, our work extends beyond simply listening. We are building the foundational proof required to attract the alliances and funding that will actively support, guide, and empower the next generation of men.
Each Speaking Sons session follows a carefully designed structure intended to create a safe and respectful environment for dialogue.
The Dynamic
A female host guides the conversation. This structure encourages openness and reduces competitive posturing that sometimes occurs in male-dominated discussions. The host’s role is to ask thoughtful questions and create space for honest reflection.
The Voices & The Scale
Guests are young men from the community whose experiences reflect the realities many others silently carry.
To ensure every conversation receives the time and focus it deserves, our production is carefully paced. We invite 52 selected guests to sit in the chair each year, which are compiled into 12 master episodes annually. Participants may come from different backgrounds, professions, and life stages, but all share one common role: contributing their honest perspective.
The Written Archive
We recognize that the number of young men with valuable insights far exceeds the 52 physical seats available each year. While on-camera opportunities are limited, our listening is continuous. If you wish to volunteer your story, share a private struggle, or contribute to the research without appearing on video, you are always welcome to submit your written experiences directly to our team by submitting an application. Every story helps us build a more accurate archive.
The Subjects
Conversations may explore themes such as:
The pressure to provide
The expectations placed on men
Emotional isolation and mental health
The meaning of responsibility
Fatherhood and mentorship
Faith, purpose, and direction
The transition from boyhood to manhood
Each discussion—whether recorded on camera or submitted in writing—is preserved as part of an evolving social archive.
Speaking Sons functions as a growing collection of documented conversations.
These recordings serve both as public dialogue and as a record of perspectives that may otherwise remain unheard.
Episodes are published through platforms such as YouTube and distributed in short form through TikTok to make the conversations accessible to a wider audience.
